Back in February we proudly announced that we were working with Shaw University to create a mural for their 150th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for October of this year.
As part of that partnership, we helped promote their call-for-artists. Submissions were collected and last month Shaw University announced that Scott Nurkin, founder of The Mural Shop in Chapel Hill, was selected to paint murals below the university’s Blount Street pedestrian bridges, between East South Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Student artists and other volunteers also will participate.
Nurkin is expected to begin painting next month and complete his work in about three months. The mural will be unveiled in November during Shaw’s homecoming and anniversary celebration.
In the meantime, the university approached us about having an artist paint the space to further raise awareness about the project. Shaw has currently raised $80,000 of its $135,000 goal for the overall revitalization project that consists of the mural, infrastructure and landscaping. Today, donations have come from individuals, as well as from PNC Bank, Duke Energy, the city of Raleigh and Cherokee Investment Partners.
We excitingly were able to connect local artist, and frequent muralist, Lisa Gaither with the university to complete a pre-mural to help in raising awareness of the project.
Lisa did an amazing job with the mural as well as documenting her her process.
